Learning: notes for parents

Useful book: “Help Your Child to Succeed” Bill Lucas and Alistair Smith (although aimed at parents of younger children).


Some key points:

  • pracise goal-setting;

  • share your own aspirations with children;

  • encourage talk about feelings;

  • share your own enthusiasms with children and take an interest in theirs;

  • mistakes are okay;

  • break down challenging tasks into chunks;

  • find out about coaching;

  • make a regular time for learning together;


Five Secrets

    1. Be positive;

    2. Use planning and goal-setting;

    3. Make connections with what your child already knows;

    4. Help your child learn by seeing, hearing and doing;

    5. Review.
